Blueberry Blues

I should’ve known better. Last fall I removed the chicken wire from around my blueberry bushes. It was more than 10 years old and starting to rust. I thought about replacing it, but because we have so many foxes in our neighborhood now, rabbits have been scarce the last couple of years.

Not so this year! They severely pruned my blueberries over the winter—all newer shoots are chewed back to the ground, and the rest of the branches look like they were pruned by an intoxicated person. I know it was rabbits because they left their calling card.

If I want fresh blueberries this year I’ll have to go to the farmer’s market.
