I wish I could explain the spell daylily ‘Potosi’ has over me, but every year when it starts blooming I’m drawn to it like a magnet.
I planted this daylily in my flowerbed in 2009. During its first summer of bloom I wrote:
I purchased daylily ‘Potosi’ based on a photograph and the rave reviews of a group of daylily enthusiasts who squealed with delight when I mentioned its name.
When ‘Potosi’ bloomed last summer in my garden it was every bit as gorgeous as I’d hoped. The flowers are golden-yellow, but when you look at them closely you can see flashes of orange or coral trying reach the surface of ‘Potosi’s’ diamond-dusted petals.
‘Potosi’ grows 30 inches tall but my plant grows in part-sun so it doesn’t get quite that tall, so I can get away with having it in the front of my flower border. That allows me to take lots of up-close photos of the stunning flowers. And as a bonus, those 6-inch flowers have a lovely fragrance.
I probably grow at least 20 different gold daylily cultivars, but ‘Potosi’ is the only one that takes my breath away.
