Return of ‘Bang Bang’

Last summer I purchased several new daylilies, and one of them came shipped with a scape that included some flower buds. I let it bloom because curiosity got the best of me.

As I mentioned last summer, Daylily ‘Bang Bang’ is classified as an “unusual form daylily that is crispate and spatulate” meaning the petals and sepals twist or pinch at the ends (crispate) and the segments are also markedly wider at the ends like a spoon (spatulate).

Last summer it indeed looked like a unusual form daylily:

So far this summer the flowers look like regular daylily flowers:

‘Bang Bang’ in morning light
‘Bang Bang’ in afternoon light

Perhaps as additional flowers open they will start to exhibit more of the unusual form characteristics.

This daylily really stands out from a distance with its 7-inch orange and red flowers. ‘Bang Bang’ sends up 28-inch scapes and blooms in the middle of the daylily season.
