The winner for tallest amaryllis cultivar I’ve grown this season goes to ‘Rilona’ at 30 inches. Keep in mind my bulbs grow in a south-facing bay window where it gets nice and warm on sunny afternoons, but the temperature can flirt with the 50s (F) on very chilly nights. Because of that cold, I think some of the cultivars I grow tend to stay on the shorter end of their expected growth.
‘Rilona’ has gorgeous apricot-orange blooms. They are about 7 inches wide, and what I really love about the flowers is that the petals are diamond dusted. Look at how they sparkle in the sunshine!
‘Rilona’ sent up one scape so far with 4 blooms. The flowers are outfacing and thankfully the scape has not leaned because the taller cultivars are much more likely to tip over!
It took about 8 weeks for my bulb to bloom once it was potted up.
‘Rilona’ is a nice change from the typical white, red or pink amaryllis varieties. I hope it sends up a second flower stalk.
