Happy for Hyacinths

In November when I was potting up hyacinth bulbs for forcing, I decided this might be my last year doing it for awhile.

But then when they started blooming this month, and I saw all the pretty colors and got a whiff of that intoxicating scent, I immediately changed my mind.

Forcing hyacinth bulbs is so easy. You just fill a pot with soil and push the bulbs in so the top 1/3 of the bulb is still sticking out.

Water them in thoroughly and then stick them in the crisper drawer of your refrigerator for 12 to 15 weeks. You may need to water the pot(s) a couple of times so the soil doesn’t dry out. But other than that they need no care.

After the 12 to 15 weeks is up, you take them out and give them a day to adjust to the light. The sprouts might be white but they will quickly green up, and if you put the pots in a sunny window you’ll be amazed at how fast they grow and start blooming!
