‘Northblue’

If I’m lucky, these little flowers will be blueberries in a few months. The ‘Northblue’ blueberry bushes I planted last year survived winter and are loaded with flowers.

They are planted in a very exposed location just north of our house, so I was afraid they might struggle through winter. I mulched them with 8 inches of straw and surrounded them with chickenwire so the bunnies wouldn’t chew them to the ground. When I uncovered them earlier this spring, I breathed a sigh of relief when I spotted little buds on the stems.

‘Northblue’ grows 2-1/2 feet tall and can yield up to 9 lbs. of blueberries per bush. Blueberries prefer rich soil with high organic matter (they like acidic soil) and lots of water. As a bonus, the leaves of ‘Northblue’ turn a brilliant red in the fall.
