I need to quickly get over my shock at how early my daylilies are blooming this year because whether I’m ready for them or not, they’re starting to pop.
‘Smoky Mountain Autumn’ is my second daylily to bloom this spring. (‘Jen Melon’ was the first). I try to keep track of the first flowers on each of my cultivars. ‘Smoky Mountain Autumn’ usually dazzles me in mid-July. That means my plant is blooming about 6 weeks ahead of schedule.
Daylilies rarely rebloom for me. Out of my 400 cultivars I can count on one hand the number of them that have ever sent up additional scapes after their intital blooming period. It will be interesting to see if that number increases dramatically this year, or whether my plants will just bloom early and call it quits for the summer.
