I’m pretty good at keeping track of the plants in my yard with labels and maps, but for some reason the Oriental lilies always escape my attention. Maybe it’s because I secretly fear the bulbs will be dug up and eaten by chipmunks before they ever get a chance to bloom. Or perhaps it’s because they are shipped so late in the fall that I’m always in a big hurry to tuck them into my flowerbeds before the first snowflakes fly.
I can easily identify ‘Muscadet’ because it’s my favorite Oriental lily, and I have many of them scattered throughout my flowerbeds. But when anything other than ‘Muscadet’ blooms, I’m at a loss. The lily pictured above performed beautifully in one of my daylily beds this past summer, but I don’t know the cultivar or even when I planted it. I didn’t order any bulbs in 2009, so it’s been growing in my garden for at least 2 years.
I really should label my lilies, but I must admit that it’s kind of fun not knowing where the next one might pop up.
