I grow my tomatoes next to our screened porch because it’s the sunniest spot in the yard. Since late blight has turned tomato growing into a giant headache recently, my plan was to turn that patch of soil into a butterfly/hummingbird garden instead. I was going to plant salvias, butterfly bushes (pictured above), zinnias and other annuals and perennials that attract them, and then relax on the porch and enjoy a front-row seat for all the action.
It seemed like a brilliant scheme until the seed catalogs arrived with all those flashy photographs and mouth-watering descriptions. Sticking with my plan is going to be harder than I thought.
