I’m supposed to be planting coleus seeds today, but we’re in the midst of a snowstorm (AGAIN) and it’s got me concerned. We often get a big snowstorm or two in March and the snow quickly melts and eventually spring wins out over winter, but we’re currently in week 4 of a snowstorm-of-the-week pattern that shows no signs of stopping. Plus, our temperatures have been much colder than normal. It makes me wonder if I should delay planting some of my seeds.
My timing was thrown off last March as well, but for very different reasons. On March 6th, 2012, we hit a high of 65 which was 30 degrees above normal. By March 15th we were enjoying temperatures in the low 80s. I followed my gut and shifted my seed-sowing operation into high gear. It paid off. I had all my plants in the garden by mid-May—two weeks early.
I know the weather can change suddenly in Wisconsin this time of year, but I also now how challenging it can be to keep my plants healthy when they start to get too big to fit under the grow lights.
I was hoping my gut would tell me what to do again this year, but so far all it’s saying is: “It’s snowing again. Make me some comfort food.”
