Fairy gardens are all the rage right now. Garden centers are stuffed with adorable 2-inch potted plants and tiny furniture, garden tools and gnomes. There are classes and even books you can buy on the topic.
My sister gave me a fairy garden kit for my birthday in June. One of my favorite crafts in elementary school was shoe-box dioramas, so this was right up my alley. I bought my planter and picked out the plants soon after, but I kept butting heads with my inner-perfectionist who wanted everything to be planned out in perfect detail before I started. Last week I decided I was being ridiculous. I gathered my soil, plants and supplies and dove in. Here’s the result:
I’ll admit there was a lot of trial and error. Those poor plants got tucked in and pulled out again a number of times. When I finished, the only flowers in my garden were those tiny ceramic sunflowers. I wanted a little more color, so I went to the craft store and bought a few sprigs of artificial flowers which I cut apart and stuck among the live plants.
I love gazing into the itty-bitty world I created. I even put water in the birdbath!
I had so much fun making my fairy garden that I’m already planning another one. Among other ideas, I hope to build and paint a craft-stick log cabin.
