I marvel at the accomplishments of daylily breeders, but sometimes the flowers look a little overdone to me. Daylily ‘Spacecoast Sea Shells’ falls into that category, but against my better judgement I purchased a discounted plant at a daylily sale a couple years ago. When the first flowers opened up last summer I couldn’t stop taking photos of them:
‘Spacecoast Sea Shells’ is a 2003 introduction that grows 30 inches tall. The 5.5″ flowers are cream-colored and have a purple eye and purple edge on the petals. The throat is yellow.
Instead of being too much, the flowers add some festive and fun flair to my flowerbed. I’m glad I took a chance on something I assumed I wouldn’t like.
‘Spacecoast Sea Shells’ blooms in the middle of the daylily season.
