I gasped when I saw it, and then I looked around for bones or guts. There were tufts of what looked like gray or black fur sticking up all over parts of the lawn. I could only imagine a coyote or fox had nabbed something big and furry like a raccoon and ripped it to shreds overnight.
But there were no gruesome bits, and as I inched closer I realized I was looking at some sort of freaky mold or fungus. Each of the hairlike strands had a little tiny round ball at the top:
I’ve never seen anything like it before, but it’s been a great year for fungi and our 20-degrees-above-average temperatures last week were causing plants and animals to do all sorts of odd things.
It’s going to be an interesting winter.

This is really strange, Em. I haven’t noticed anything like this in our yard. Don’t know how it looks in your yard, but the pictures make it look very interesting. And kinda creepy!! Love the colors of your late-blooming asters and petunias. Very vibrant.
