Waiting for Winter

The calendar won’t declare it’s officially winter for a few days yet, but usually by this time of year we’ve already had a few snowstorms and plenty of cold weather. Like much of the United States, southern Wisconsin is the midst of a warmer-than-average December with below-average precipitation.

I took a stroll around the yard over the weekend and some of my perennials are still growing. This is Corydalis:

And some of my daylilies look as happy as if it was early May, not December:

Because cardinal flowers love moisture and we had a serious drought this past summer, I think my plants actually look happier now than they have all year!

Lamium can be invasive so it doesn’t surprise me that this plant survived a hard freeze and is still thriving on the east side of our house. That area gets very little sun in the winter.

And this Creeping Charlie (ground ivy) may be able to take over the world by spring if we don’t get some subzero temperatures soon!
