The lovely yellow edges on this ‘David Kirchhoff’ daylily are often referred to by daylily aficionados as “chicken fat”.
Breeders are creating more and more cultivars with this ruffly characteristic. The only problem is that sometimes the ruffles snag on each other and the flowers have difficulty opening fully.
I haven’t grown any such daylilies, but last year I purchased a dozen new cultivars at a daylily sale in late summer. When I got home I discovered that four of them have chicken-fat edges, so I guess I’m about to find out firsthand how well they perform.
