Two summers ago I was worried about thirsty plants and my brown, crunchy lawn. This year the skies just won’t stop leaking. We just experienced our 5th wettest June on record. I’ve documented 14+ inches in my rain gauge in the last 60 days.
All the vegetation is lush and green and growing out of control. I’ll take that over drought any day. But unfortunately some of my annuals are starting to rot at the stem from consistently being buried by rain-pounded, wet soil. They just keel over at the base and what little stem remains, snaps.
It’s just my luck that most of the felled plants have been located in the front rows of flowerbeds, and their demise has left me with gaps. Nothing drives me crazier than a bare spot, so I’ve been poking around the yard looking for any volunteer annuals I can use to fill those spaces. Thanks to all that rain, I’ve had plenty to choose from.
Some of my front rows might look a little funny later this summer, but there won’t be any gaps!
