We finally made some headway on the dry/drought conditions in southern Wisconsin in late summer. In September we were actually 1.5 inches above average for the year. We haven’t been above average for precipitation in a couple of years.
But a very dry October completely reversed that trend and soon we were back in a 1.5-inch deficit. We’ve gone into the last 3 winters with dry conditions which weakens plants and trees. I have a lot of perennials that have not reappeared in the spring over the last couple of years. Thankfully I have plenty of daylilies I can dig and divide for free and fill those bare spots.
I was very thankful to see more than 2.5″ in the rain gauge after a strong spring-like storm system moved through this weekend. It made a wet, leafy mess everywhere, but it got us back above normal again.
