Time: 2 p.m.
Conditions: Sunny and 40 degrees (warm that pavement, warm that pavement!)
Observed From: The backyard
Notes: It’s a good thing birds can’t surf the internet or watch TV because they don’t want to know what’s coming tomorrow. Every time I check on the forecast hoping the storm is going to take “a right turn at Albuquerque”, it gets worse. Now we’ve been upgraded to a Winter Storm Warning and are in the bullseye for 5-10 inches of snow.
Today’s Count:
- 1 Cardinal
- 3 Mourning Doves
- 4 Juncos
- 2 Goldfinches (the feathers on the males are getting brighter every day!)
- 2 Red-bellied Woodpeckers (both Mr. and Mrs.)
- 2 Chickadees
- 2 Red-breasted Nuthatches taking turns caching seeds in the bark of my apple tree
- 3 Crows carrying on so loudly that I’m pretty sure the Cooper’s Hawk is in the ‘hood, but I can’t spot her
- 3 Gray Squirrels
- 1 Chipmunk who will be sorry he ever came out of his winter hiding place
