I used to keep a tally of summer rain amounts in my garden journal, but this spring I decided I wouldn’t bother this year. I picked a bad year to give up because the total amount of rain that has fallen in my yard since May would be an eye-opener.
There’s no point in looking at Madison’s official total because it’s recorded at the airport on the other (east) side of the city. The rain and snow totals over there have always varied wildly from this side (west) of the city. For example when the west side saw 10-13 inches of rain on that night of severe flooding in August, the airport only recorded a couple of inches.
I figure since mid-August I’ve emptied at least 30 inches of rain from my rain gauge, and it just keeps coming.
The neighbors leave their cat outside overnight and the poor thing has spent a great deal of his summer and early fall nights nights sleeping or trying to lick himself dry near our front door where there’s a nice roof overhang. I know this because he always triggers our doorbell security camera.
I was hoping fall would mean an end to the wet weather, but there are chances of rain just about every day for the next 10 days.
