I currently have 900 annual flowers growing in my basement with another several thousand seeds left to sow over the next several weeks.
So far the germination rates have been excellent, and I’ve remembered to keep everyone well-watered.
Yesterday the local meteorologists were pointing out that 7 years ago we broke a record for the high temperature on March 21—83 degrees. That was the year one of my daylilies bloomed in March. I also remember it as the year the growing season for perennials was pretty much over in late July instead of late August because everything got such an early start and we baked in the heat for much of the summer.
We have 40s in our future instead of 80s, but after the winter we’ve had it still feels like a heatwave. The snow piles are shrinking fast and the songbirds are already competing for nesting territories. Spring is finally here!
