This weekend my friend and I were hiking at a county park that features a small lake.
We were stumbling around behind our face masks and severely-fogged-up glasses when suddenly there was the most eerie, almost-ghostly sound. We both stopped in our tracks and said “WHAT the heck was THAT!?”
We stood still but the noise didn’t repeat. About 10 minutes later while walking in the woods a little further from the lake we heard it again, but it was slightly different.
We eventually determined it must’ve been sound vibrations from cracking or melting ice on the lake.
It was the weirdest experience because the sound moved as if something invisible whooshed toward us, swirled around our heads and disappeared up into the air (like a ghost). It also reminded me of whale sounds.
This brief YouTube video features sounds similar to what we heard:
I did some internet research and you can also make cool noises by skipping or throwing rocks onto ice. That makes more of a high-pitched pinging sound.
Next time.
