Waking Up

We’ve been enjoying a rare and unusual summer week in April with temperatures near 80(F) and blue skies. My friend and I snuck in a quick 45-minute birdwatching outing on Monday morning to try to jump start our yearly tally of species. We drove to a little spot of nature only 5 minutes from her house.

I’ll say more about that in a different post, but as we were wrapping up our excursion I noticed the ground move. I shrieked and my friend whipped around to see a garter snake slithering past my feet.

He wasn’t alone!

It became a little parade of snakes following each other. I was afraid I’d step on one! While this is probably someone else’s nightmare, I find snakes fascinating.

We wrapped up the trip by admiring the scilla popping up from the forest floor. Accumulating snow may arrive on Sunday night/Monday morning, so this little preview of summer was the boost everyone needed!
