Swing and a Miss

A derecho (a long-lived straight-line wind storm that can travel hundreds of miles) formed in Minnesota this afternoon and raced across Wisconsin, Illinois and into Indiana. The radar image of the bow echo with this storm was something to behold. It looked like a scorpion ready to strike.

The wind really howled for a bit, but we were spared any damage in our yard. Not far from here, big trees blew down, taking power lines with them.

After the storm, we were left with a beautiful display of mammatus clouds:

These are beautiful pictures of the mammatus clouds. Thanks to the call we received, we were able to view them in all their glory also.
This type of cloud doesn’t form often, does it?
