If you step outside into my backyard right now you can hear wee cheers and the sound of tiny glasses clinking together in toasts for the overabundance of rain we had overnight and this morning (almost 3 inches—with more on the way tonight).
The rain was so heavy, my Asiatic lilies became translucent:
Who’s doing the celebrating? Why the mosquitoes, earwigs and slugs of course. They were getting a little concerned. Things were drying out around here and times were getting tough. I was already thinking about how lonely I would be without my buzzy little mosquito friends following me wherever I went. Now I don’t have to worry because there’s plenty of standing water for them to lay eggs in.
And the slugs won’t dry out and can spend their nights shimmying up my daylily scapes so they are first in line for breakfast when the blossoms open in the morning. I can’t tell you what a relief it is to know they will be okay.
The earwigs—the biggest population I’ve seen in 15 years—can go back to having huge parties in my rose blossoms and stripping my annuals to pathetic stems.
Yes, the euphoria here is palpable. I would love to celebrate with them, but I’m a little busy. I have to go outside now with my bucket of soapy water and pluck Japanese Beetles from all of my flowers.

Dear Em,
Good thing you have a terrific sense of humor, otherwise you wouldn’t be having so much fun with all your furry, slimy and colorful pests!
Keep smiling!
Love, ear
