We had a retaining wall built in our front yard late last fall and the landscape company had to quit on November 30th when the snow started and just never stopped. They’re coming back this spring to finish the job, but because the winter was so long and my husband and I had too much time to think, we’ve decided we’ll have them redesign our front entrance and do some grading too.
Unfortunately, that means I have to get all of my plants out of the front yard including 25 daylilies and several dozen perennials. There’s not enough room in my backyard to temporarily store all of those plants, so now I have to decide what to keep and what to give away.
Yesterday I spent all day outside digging up plants and tucking them into any space I could find in the backyard. I decided to start with my most cherished plants first and work my way down the list.
Of course I wanted to rescue all my new ‘Ruby Spider’ daylilies and favorites like my ‘Unique Purple’ daylily (photo above) and my ‘Rosemont Firebrand’ daylily (below), but as the day wore on, the decisions got harder and harder.
By the end of the day I was only halfway through the list and I was too tired to be making rational decisions anymore, so I saved the rest for this afternoon. I’m going for the world record for number of plants that can squished into one little plot of land. Wish me luck.

Dear Em,
How are you doing on relocating your daylilies? Have you found room for all of them, plus your other perennials?
Don’t throw anything away!! I can probably find a spot or two for anything you don’t want!
Love, ear
