It’s been a very strange summer. I can count on one hand the number of times we’ve used the air conditioner. That’s unprecedented. Last year we didn’t hit 90 degrees until September 2nd, but there were still plenty of hot and humid days. This summer most of our daytime temperatures have peaked in the 70s with low humidity. We had the coolest July on record, and I even used the fireplace a couple of times.
The cool temperatures caused a lack of unsettled weather as well. It’s not unusual for us to see a dozen or more severe weather events during summer, but this year we’ve only had 2 or 3 severe thunderstorm watches or warnings (not a single tornado warning), and none of the storms ever survived long enough to impact Madison.
I can’t recall a summer with so few thunderstorms—severe or not. Unfortunately that also means it’s been dry. We haven’t had a soaking rain since August 8th. For three weeks now it’s been sunny with temperatures in the 70s. The extended forecast calls for at least another 7 days of the same.
I’m not complaining (except on behalf of the grass, plants and trees which could really use some rain). This has been the most gorgeous summer I can remember.
I wonder what winter has in store for us.
