Flower Ideas: Show Me…Long-blooming Perennials

Balloon Flowers (Platycodon grandiflorus) like ‘Single Blue’ and ‘Marieseii’ will bloom for months if you cut off the spent flowers.

The first show in early July is the most spectacular, but the plants will continue to send up plenty of new flowers well into fall, and then the foliage turns a spectacular shade of gold:

Coreopsis ‘Mercury Rising’ starts blooming in June, and the pretty flowers keep coming until a killing frost. ‘Mercury Rising’ grows 15-18″ tall and prefers average soil in full sun. The ruby-red flowers look especially striking planted next to gold flowers.

Daylily ‘Custard Candy’ will provide you with as many as 500 blooms in a season once the plants are established. The cream-colored flowers have a maroon eye and appear on 24-inch scapes.

The plants are sturdy and easy to divide so you can spend money on one plant and in a few years have a whole army of ‘Custard Candy’ daylilies for an impressive garden display or to share with friends and family. Like all daylilies, you can just plant ‘Custard Candy’ and forget it. The plant doesn’t need any special care and is not bothered by animals or insect pests.
