Most impatiens are happy in the shade, but ‘Sunny Lady Cranberry’ isn’t afraid to battle the heat and the sun. The stunning, cranberry-red flowers appear all summer long on 8-to-10-inch plants that deadhead themselves and aren’t bothered by pests or diseases.
My plants didn’t flag or show any signs of stress until the daily high temperatures climbed into the upper 90s and low 100s for most of July last summer. Even then ‘Sunny Lady Cranberry’ rallied in the evenings and was ready to bloom again the next day.
You’ll spot daylily ‘Jersey Spider’ blooming from across the yard. The 8-inch golden flowers practically glow on whopping 46-inch-tall scapes.
‘Jersey Spider’ blooms later in the daylily season and always gives me more than a month of bright, curly blooms each summer:
Dianthus ‘Amazon Neon Purple’ is an annual that grows 24 to 36 inches tall with electric-purple flowers that appear in tight clusters.
The plants thrive in sun or part-shade, aren’t bothered by diseases or insect pests and are especially attractive to swallowtail butterflies.
